An R&A International Scholarship Project

Fibres, Colour & Circularity is a project exploring the chemistry behind different approaches to making fashion more sustainable.

The project looks beyond whether an approach is labelled “sustainable” to understand how it works in practice: the chemistry involved, the resources it requires, the challenges of scaling it, and the cultural, economic and local contexts that shape its impact.

Supported by the R&A International Scholarship, Fibres, Colour & Circularity will bring together these findings through case studies, material samples, articles and more.

The Project

Exploring the chemistry behind different approaches to making fashion more sustainable.

Fibres and Materials

Exploring how fibre structure, material choice and emerging biomaterials affect durability, performance and environmental impact.

Colour and Finishing

Looking at the chemistry of dyes, pigments, fixation and textile finishes, and how these processes can use fewer harmful chemicals, less water and less energy.

Circularity and Waste

Examining repair, reuse, waste valorisation and fibre-to-fibre recycling, alongside the practical challenges of creating more circular fashion systems.

From the molecules in a fibre to the systems that keep clothing in use, every stage offers an opportunity for change.
